Tattoo Artists: Do You Know Where Your Money Is Going?

I was tattooing in NYC in my early twenties, and earning a lot more money than most of my friends.​

I had very little savings but I wasn't worried about money, I was enjoying the lifestyle tattooing afforded me. I worked hard and spent my money however I wanted. I wasn't into cars or fancy clothes, it was more like ordering takeout every day, $100-$500 impulse purchases, and buying rounds of drinks for friends. Over the course of a few years, I spent tens of thousands of dollars on stupid things I really didn't need.

I knew I might be spending too much so I did the math and realized I lost $40,000-$50,000 over a few years. I had no clue where my money was going.

​

That's 40-50k I could have used to open a tattoo studio or buy a house.

I could have saved some of it for retirement...

 

Every time I spent money, I would think to myself-

 

"I can make this money back in only 1 or 2 tattoos, no big deal"

 

I worked with tattooers who were ten years older than me, doing the exact same thing, and they had no money saved for their future either. The thought of working my ass off for another ten years with nothing saved scared me. I was good at making money but terrible at saving it. I knew that something needed to change, immediately.

 

I would hide money around my apartment, but it never stayed hidden for long. I tried sticking to a budget, thinking that was the only real solution. I hated dealing with spreadsheets but I did manage to save up some money here and there. Budgeting, unfortunately, was not a long-term solution because I hated doing it, and eventually, I would fall off track and just say "fuck it" and order sushi.

Every year I was earning more money, but I wasn't saving more money.

​

If that is something you can relate to, I want to share a harsh truth with you.

​

If you want to own a tattoo studio, buy a home, or retire comfortably, you need to save 10%-20% of your income, consistently, for many years.

​

But you won't be able to save this amount of money on an irregular income if you don’t have some kind of system in place.

​

Preferably an automated system that also saves for taxes, and separates your business expenses, living costs, and personal spending for you. Because let's be honest, no tattooer wants to sit around for an hour and budget out their expenses every week.

If saving money for the future isn't put on automatic, it's just not gonna happen.

​

It took me about six years to figure out how to do this and adapt what I learned to fit the lifestyle and irregular income of a tattoo artist. It's hard for me to believe, but since then I've saved over $100,000! Me, the guy who couldn't save $1,000 for more than a month, saved over six figures.

 

I’ve been able to invest this money into assets that earn me passive income like stocks, crypto, real estate, and a very successful tattoo studio. I have worked at and owned my own studio (Dukkha Tattoo) for six years and it has been one of the best investments I have ever made.

Learn how a tattoo artist/financial advisor does his taxes. My system automatically puts money aside for taxes and does all the organizing and receipt saving as well which will save you time, money, and stress every year come tax season. If you ever get audited, having this system in place will be a real lifesaver.

2️⃣ How to save for future goals while protecting yourself against uncertainty. What would you do if you were injured and couldn't tattoo for a month, or more? Don’t rely on a GoFundMe campaign to cover your expenses. Sleep like a baby knowing you are building up your emergency fund. The key to the success of my system is it makes saving money easier than spending money. Eventually, you will use this same system to save for your house downpayment and retirement fund.

3️⃣ How to bring consistency to irregular income. Your income might be irregular, but your basic monthly living expenses aren't. You need to separate your living expenses from your income before it ever hits your checking account. This leaves you free to order takeout and buy that new pair of rollerblades without stress, knowing that your bills and living expenses are covered.
